Disney and Lucasfilm will begin production on the untitled Star Wars Han Solo prequel early next year. Alden Ehrenreich will play everyone’s favorite scoundrel from a galaxy far, far away. Chris Miller and Phil Lord are directing. In addition to Han, the film will feature Chewbacca. And now, it looks like another fan-favorite Star Wars character is making his return.
According to The Wrap, casting is underway for a younger Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo movie. The character was played by Billy Dee Williams in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The actor went on to reprise the role in various animated and video game projects, such as Star Wars Rebels and even The LEGO Movie.
When we first meet Lando in Empire, it’s clear that he and Han have a long history, specifically regarding the Millennium Falcon. So, it would make sense to explore at least some of that history in this film.
The codename for this part in casting circles is “Chance,” possibly a reference to Lando’s interest in cards and dice. Rumor has it that Donald Glover is the first choice for the role. But, we’ll have to wait and see. Stay tuned.
The untitled Han Solo standalone film is scheduled for release on May 25th, 2018.
