Universal and Illumination‘s latest animated tentpole, The Secret Life of Pets, has been a big hit at the box office this summer. The film crossed $300 million domestically and $400 million worldwide this week. And that’s not counting the numerous international markets where it has yet to open. So, unsurprisingly, the studio is pumping out a sequel sooner than later.
Universal announced today (via The Hollywood Reporter) that an untitled Secret Life of Pets sequel will hit theaters on July 13th, 2018, just two years after the original film’s release. Chris Renaud will return to direct, while Brian Lynch is coming back to write the script. No word on which members of the original’s voice cast will return for the sequel.
The Secret Life of Pets serves as Illumination’s second major franchise, following the hugely successful Despicable Me/Minions series. The studio is also releasing Sing in December, Despicable Me 3 in 2017, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2018.
