Star Trek Beyond is hitting theaters this weekend, but Paramount Pictures already has big plans for the next installment. Today, the studio has confirmed that a fourth film in the rebooted series is in the works, and a key player from the first movie is returning.
Paramount has announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Chris Hemsworth‘s George Kirk will return in Star Trek 4, and he will finally come face to face with his son, Jim (Chris Pine). George Kirk died in the opening sequence of 2009’s Star Trek, so how will he return in this movie? Time travel? Alternate dimensions? That has yet to be decided.
The rest of the series’ main cast – minus the late Anton Yelchin – is expected to return for Star Trek 4. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who wrote the first draft for Star Trek Beyond, will pen the fourth installment. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce via Bad Robot Productions. A director has yet to be hired.
