In this day and age, major film studios tend to set release dates for major movies years in advance. And sometimes, the exact movie dated is unknown at first. Today, Warner Bros. continues this trend, as the studio has scheduled three untitled “event” films.
According to Box Office Mojo, Warner Bros. has slated three untitled “WB Event Films.” The first will hit theaters on June 8th, 2018; the second is scheduled for August 2nd, 2019; and the third is slated for August 7th, 2020. Of course, there are no further details on what these movies are, exactly. However, we can certainly speculate.
I don’t expect any of these dates to be for a DC movie. Usually, when Warner Bros. schedules a DC movie, it says “Untitled DC Film.” And that specification is absent here. The same applies for an animated title, including LEGO and Hanna-Barbera.
WB recently applied for a film trademark for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a two-part play that continues that franchise’s story. WB is expanding the franchise with a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trilogy, and considering how profitable this series has been, it’d make sense to milk it as much as possible. In fact, the studio has cited this as one of three franchises that will be focused on for the near future, alongside DC and LEGO. So, maybe Cursed Child could be one of these dates?
Additionally, director George Miller has expressed interest in making two sequels to Mad Max: Fury Road, one of last year’s most critically acclaimed blockbusters. Could a sequel be one of WB’s newly dated event films?
Again, this is all my personal speculation. It’s possible that none of these films will be WB’s three new event dates. We’ll just have to wait and see. What do you think the three movies are?
