After being removed from Universal‘s release schedule, the future of Legendary Pictures‘ Pacific Rim sequel was left in doubt. Recently, however, Steven S. DeKnight replaced Guillermo del Toro in the director’s chair, while a new screenwriter was hired. Now, the sequel has made a very exciting addition to its cast.
According to Deadline, Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has been cast as the new lead character in Pacific Rim 2. He will play the son of Idris Elba‘s Stacker Pentecost, who – spoiler! – died in the first movie. The sequel intends to bring back characters from the original film as well.
Del Toro had this to say about Boyega’s casting. “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.” Producer Mary Parent also praises Boyega, citing his talent and charm as an actor.
Pacific Rim 2 is expected to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2016. A new release date has not been announced yet. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
