Filming for Universal‘s The Mummy, which stars Tom Cruise, is underway. The reboot is expected to launch a Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe (UMCU), featuring movies such as The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man and many more. Now, we have some new casting news for The Mummy that further teases what’s to come in the UMCU.
According to Deadline, Oscar winner Russell Crowe is in early talks to join the cast of The Mummy. While his potential character is described as a “Jekyll-type role,” The Hollywood Reporter says that the character is in fact Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The plan is for Dr. Jekyll to appear in The Mummy before headlining his own movie and potential franchise in the UMCU.
Variety adds that Crowe’s potential (small) role is one of several cameos in The Mummy from classic monster characters. These will help expand the UMCU, and the characters have the potential to be spun off into their own films/franchises.
However, Crowe’s casting is far from a done deal, as he and Universal are only in the “early talks” phase. According to THR, the studio previously sought Tom Hardy and Javier Bardem for the role, but both actors turned it down. So, we’ll see how it fares with Crowe.
The Mummy also stars Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson. The film is set to hit theaters on June 9th, 2017. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
