Update: Nerdist has reached out to 20th Century Fox, who says that the following rumor is “not true.” The original story follows.
It appears that 20th Century Fox is moving full speed ahead with its latest X-Men spin-off, The New Mutants. Josh Boone is on board to direct, and he’s also co-writing the script with Knate Gwaltney. Now, a new report reveals that two of the film’s new mutants have been cast, while a couple of players from X-Men: Apocalypse are expected to return.
According to HitFix, actresses Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy will star in The New Mutants. Williams will play Wolfsbane, while Taylor-Joy will portray Magik. The studio is also currently casting for the roles of Cannonball, Sunspot and Mirage, all members of the original New Mutants lineup in the comics.
Also joining the team in this film is Alexandra Shipp‘s Storm, who will make her debut in X-Men: Apocalypse. Plus, James McAvoy, who played Charles Xavier/Professor X in the last three installments, is expected to play a “significant” role in The New Mutants.
No release date for The New Mutants has been set yet. However, could it be one of Fox’s untitled Marvel movies set for 2018? With development moving along quickly, that wouldn’t be too surprising. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
