Not Yet Rated’s Official 2016 Oscar Predictions

The Academy Awards are this weekend and it is a great time to be a movie fan. While many are outraged by the lack of diversity, it is hard to say that the movies nominated are not great. Even if you disagree with the choices the Academy made with their nominations, it is always interesting to see who wins, who loses, and what controversial thing the host will say. So before you watch the Oscars this weekend, check out Not Yet Rated’s Oscar Predictions.

Best Visual Effects

  • Mad Max: Fury Road – Colin Motill
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Jeff Kemp
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – John Mathews
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Matt Saponar
  • Mad Max: Fury Road – Will Martinez

Consensus:

We think that Star Wars: The Force Awakens but is very possible that Mad Max: Fury Road could snag it for its amazing practical effects or The Revenant could take it for the bear scene alone.

Best Original Score

  • The Hateful Eight – Colin Motill
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Jeff Kemp
  • The Hateful Eight – John Mathews
  • The Hateful Eight – Matt Saponar
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Will Martinez

Consensus:

The team thinks that Ennio Morricone could finally get his Oscar this year but you should never count out the power of John Williams.

Best Adapted Screenplay

  • The Big Short – Colin Motill
  • The Big Short – Jeff Kemp
  • The Big Short – John Mathews
  • The Big Short – Matt Saponar
  • Room – Will Martinez

Consensus:

Clearly, we think that Adam McKay’s script for The Big Short will definitely take home the award for adapting Michael Lewis’ acclaimed book. We also seriously doubt Will on this one.

Best Original Screenplay

  • Spotlight – Colin Motill
  • Spotlight – Jeff Kemp
  • Spotlight – John Mathews
  • Spotlight – Matt Saponar
  • Spotlight – Will Martinez

Consensus:

Spotlight.

Best Editing

  • The Big Short – Colin Motill
  • Mad Max: Fury Road – Jeff Kemp
  • Mad Max: Fury Road – John Mathews
  • Mad Max: Fury Road – Matt Saponar
  • The Revenant – Will Martinez

Consensus:

Mad Max is a clear favorite but the uniqueness behind The Big Short’s editing could take it and never count out The Revenant in any category.

Best Animated Feature

  • Inside Out – Colin Motill
  • Inside Out – Jeff Kemp
  • Inside Out – John Mathews
  • Inside Out – Matt Saponar
  • Inside Out – Will Martinez

Consensus:

While Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa poises a decent threat, Pixar and Inside Out have this one in the bag.

Best Cinematography

  • The Revenant – Colin Motill
  • The Revenant – Jeff Kemp
  • The Revenant – John Mathews
  • The Revenant – Matt Saponar
  • The Revenant – Will Martinez

Consensus:

Emmanuel Lubezki will more than likely take home his third straight Oscar for his amazing work on The Revenant.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Alicia Vikander – Colin Motill
  • Alicia Vikander – Jeff Kemp
  • Alicia Vikander – John Mathews
  • Kate Winslet – Matt Saponar
  • Alicia Vikander – Will Martinez

Consensus:

It has always been a two way race between Alicia Vikander and Kate Winslet and we think that while Winslet was great, Vikander will get the win.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Sylvester Stallone – Colin Motill
  • Sylvester Stallone – Jeff Kemp
  • Sylvester Stallone – John Mathews
  • Sylvester Stallone – Matt Saponar
  • Sylvester Stallone – Will Martinez

Consensus:

He’s f*cking Rocky.

Best Actress

  • Brie Larson – Colin Motill
  • Brie Larson – Jeff Kemp
  • Brie Larson – John Mathews
  • Brie Larson – Matt Saponar
  • Brie Larson – Will Martinez

Consensus:

With very little competition, Brie Larson is the biggest lock of the entire award show. Guaranteed win.

Best Actor

  • Leonardo DiCaprio – Colin Motill
  • Leonardo DiCaprio – Jeff Kemp
  • Leonardo DiCaprio – John Mathews
  • Leonardo DiCaprio – Matt Saponar
  • Leonardo DiCaprio – Will Martinez

Consensus:

The jokes can stop now.

Best Director

  • Alejandro González Iñárritu – Colin Motill
  • Alejandro González Iñárritu – Jeff Kemp
  • Alejandro González Iñárritu – John Mathews
  • Alejandro González Iñárritu – Matt Saponar
  • George Miller – Will Martinez

Consensus:

Alejandro González Iñárritu will probably win in back to back years but don’t count out George Miller because, I mean, did you see Fury Road?

Best Picture

  • Spotlight – Colin Motill
  • The Revenant – Jeff Kemp
  • Spotlight – John Mathews
  • The Revenant – Matt Saponar
  • Spotlight – Will Martinez

Consensus:

This is where it gets interesting. We are nearly split but the majority gives it to Spotlight. However, The Revenant or even The Big Short could easily take it home. If there was a 3 sided coin, I would recommend flipping it.

And there you have it. While we may get a lot right or a lot wrong, it will certianly be an interesting night. Disagree with our opinions? Let us know in the comments or by tweeting @NotYetRatedSite.
