Deadpool is finally hitting theaters this weekend, after many years in development hell. The Ryan Reynolds-starrer is garnering strong positive buzz from fans and critics, while it is tracking for a $65M four-day opening, possibly more. This is a particularly impressive opening for the first major R-rated superhero film in years. So, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that 20th Century Fox is already plotting a follow-up film.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that a Deadpool sequel has already been greenlit. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote the first film, will return for the second one. Director Tim Miller is not signed on for the sequel yet, but Fox hopes that he, along with the rest of the film’s creative team, will come back.
Deadpool 2 will mark the latest X-Men related film to enter development at Fox. The studio is currently prepping Gambit, X-Force and New Mutants, as well as one final Wolverine film starring Hugh Jackman. And X-Men: Apocalypse is coming out in May. A great time to be an X-Men fan.
Stay tuned for more Deadpool news as we have it.
