This bit of casting news for Doctor Strange that just came out will inevitably lead to lots of puns. Benedict Wong has joined the Marvel project to play, well, Wong according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Wong (the character, not the actor) has been a part of the Doctor Strange lore going back to the 60’s. He serves as Doctor Strange’s sidekick who performs healing duties, assists in occult matters, has an understanding of martial arts, and tends to Strange’s affairs. He’s also assigned to look after Strange’s body whenever the hero astral projects himself into other dimensional planes according to THR’s Borys Kit.
Wong (the actor, not the character he’ll be playing) has appeared in a few sci-fi titles such as Sunshine, Moon, Prometheus and most recently, last year’s The Martian.
Wong will be joining a cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, who’ll be playing the titular character, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton. Scott Derrickson will direct a screenplay written by C. Robert Cargill, who wrote Derrickson’s horror film Sinister.
Doctor Strange hits theaters later this year on November 4th.
