As 2015 cinema comes to an end, cinephiles and casual movie fans alike are already looking forward to next year’s slate. With a wide range of indie films and blockbusters slanted for release, 2016 looks to be another spectacular year for film. These are just some of the most highly anticipated films of 2016.
Martin Scorsese’s next film – currently slated for release sometime in 2016 – is a historical drama about two priests who face violent persecution when they travel to Japan. The film is based on the novel of the same name, written by Jay Cocks. The film’s stacked cast features Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson. Given Scorsese’s stellar filmography, Silence will hopefully be another worthy addition to his collection of films.
#4 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
After the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans of the franchise are eager to get another taste of a galaxy far, far away. Rogue One is an intriguing premise. The film’s story is set between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, and focuses on a select unit of rebel fighters who band together to steal the plans of the Empire’s Death Star. With director Gareth Edwards at the helm, Rogue One looks to be an exciting journey back to the timeframe of the original Star Wars. Let’s hope Darth Vader gets to make an appearance.
The sci-fi resurgence in Hollywood will continue with Morten Tyldum’s Passengers. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, the film tells the story of a spaceship carrying thousands of people to a colony planet. When one passenger wakes up decades before arrival, the man decides to wake up a second passenger. Described as a science fiction romance, the film has many excited. This is due to the unusual pairing of Pratt and Lawrence, who will take up most of the film’s screen time.
#2 The Jungle Book
When the first trailer dropped, many were floored by the breathtaking visuals and groundbreaking special effects. The cast is loaded with talent, featuring Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Scarlett Johansson and more. Director Jon Favreau looks to take motion capture effects to another level with the film. Let’s just hope the film turns out better than 2013’s Maleficent. This year’s Cinderella was a promising step up. Hopefully, The Jungle Book will continue that step up, as Disney seems to be remaking all their animated classics.
#1 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
