After the success of the Men in Black trilogy, Sony Pictures is keen to continue the franchise with a “reinvention.” It has been said before that Will Smith will not reprise his iconic role as Agent J in the fourth film. No word on Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K yet, though. Now, we have a new update on the fourquel, shedding some insight on what to expect.
Speaking with BBC Newsbeat, Men in Black producers Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes offered an update on the fourth installment. MacDonald revealed that a new female lead will be introduced, saying, “There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film].” You may remember in the original Men in Black that Agent J was paired with a new partner, Agent L, aka Laurel Weaver. Unfortunately, we never got to see this duo work together for the MiB, as Men in Black II had J reteam with Agent K. Sounds like this mistake may be remedied in the fourth film.
As for whether or not Will Smith will return, Parkes simply says, “Never count Will out.” He adds, “We are quite early on in it. We sort of looked at the first three in retrospect as a bit of a trilogy. … Now we are looking at a reinvention. But it’s a wonderful world to get back into.”
So, Smith’s return isn’t out of the realm of possibility. This suggests that the new movie is not a complete reboot, as previously rumored. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
