Universal Pictures is moving forward with its reboot of The Mummy, which will formally mark the start of the studio’s monsters cinematic universe. This universe will be spearheaded by producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan; Kurtzman will also direct The Mummy, while Jon Spaihts is writing the script. Now, the reboot is looking to lock down a big A-list actor.
According to Variety, prolific action star Tom Cruise is in talks to join The Mummy. Cruise was originally set to reteam with director Doug Liman for Luna Park next spring, but Liman has since been hired to do Gambit instead. So, Cruise had an opening in his schedule before shooting Mission: Impossible 6, so here we are.
While Cruise is not likely to produce The Mummy, he is expected to play a key role in developing not only this franchise, but the entire monsters universe. Characters from some movies are expected to appear in other monsters’ films, leading to an Avengers-style team-up ensemble film. Cruise is certainly a big get for this potential mega-franchise, and it will be interesting to see what happens next.
Expect more news to come soon. The Mummy is set to hit theaters March 27th, 2017.
