After Rupert Wyatt left the project over a month ago, Twentieth Century Fox has been pushing to find a replacement to direct the upcoming X-Men spinoff Gambit. Channing Tatum is attached to star as the titular character and it appears the search for a new director is down to just three. According to HeroicHollywood, it is down to Shane Black (Iron Man 3), Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow), and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).
Shane Black is a fantastic screenwriter and director who is currently in post-production of his next film The Nice Guys starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Black is also attached to direct a reboot of Predator for Fox so that film could be pushed back if he does take the Gambit job. Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow was a fantastic surprise in 2014 and many have wanted to see him get into the superhero genre. However, Joe Cornish may be the most interesting choice. After just receiving a writing credit for Ant-Man, he is most well known for the alien comedy Attack the Block starring John Boyega. His style is akin to his friend Edgar Wright’s and it will be interesting to see what he could do with the Ragin’ Cajun.
Gambit is currently slated to be released on October 7, 2016.
