It’s official! After announcing last month that they have plans to have Godzilla and King Kong square off in the same movie (which had fans of the two monsters roaring in delight; no pun intended), Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures today set a release date (at least a release year) for when we can expect The King of Monsters and Kong to fight!
Godzilla vs. Kong will hit theaters sometime in 2020. Unfortunately, that’s a long time away, but in the meantime, we’ll have Kong: Skull Island (which starts production on Saturday, and arrives in theaters on March 10, 2017) and Godzilla 2 (June 8, 2018) to tide us over.
But that’s not all. Legendary CEO Thomas Tull said the following in a statement:
Shortly following Legendary’s pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.
That’s right. Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah will be in this universe as well. Could we see Godzilla and King Kong team up to battle some of these classic creatures? Whether they do or don’t, this news is super exciting for fans of Godzilla and/or King Kong, as well as fans of monster movies in general.
