There has been a lot of excitement surrounding Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deadpool as of late (well deserved I might add) but are they 2016’s best when it comes to comic book movies? What if I told you that Suicide Squad might be the best comic book movie of 2016? Most of you probably wouldn’t believe me, and that’s okay. I’m sure by the end of this article you’ll at least consider this a slight possibility.
Next year The Deadpool movie releases, this is one of they few hard R-rated comic book films ever. With Ryan Reynolds staring as the merc with a mouth in a film that the fans essentially made happen because of the buzz surrounding a test footage “leak”. This will surely be one of the most anticipated action movies released next year. Next, we have Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which marks the very first time Batman and Superman will be featured in the same live-action film. Not only will they be fighting each other, they’ll eventually have to team up to stop a “greater threat” which will bring them together to form the Justice League. Bring Wonder Woman in for good luck and you have the most anticipated movie of all-time! This brings us to Captain America: Civil War, which features the first appearance of Black Panther, the first African superhero which alone is a huge deal, but Spider-Man is also making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as well. Not to mention that Captain America and Iron Man will be against each other for the majority of the film, this just might be Marvel’s biggest movie yet. Now you bring X-Men: Apocalypse into the equation. This semi-reboot has a bunch of young and talented actors playing the iconic roles of Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Storm. The young heroes will have to face off against the most powerful mutant on the planet, Apocalypse.
After everything I Just listed how can Suicide Squad be better than those four movies? It’s simple actually. You see, every movie listed above (aside from Deadpool) has one thing in common, they’re all stories of good versus evil. The Suicide Squad is about bad versus evil, this is something that’s never been done in the superhero genre. The basic premise is that Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) has a special ops team consisted of mostly criminals who she can control because of the explosives she planted in their heads. If they try to double-cross her she can blow their minds in an instant (hence the name “Suicide Squad”.) The team leader is usually Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), an expert in all military tactics and strategies, but he may be splitting duties with Deadshot, (Will Smith) a master marksman and brilliant tactician. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is The Joker’s (sometimes?) girlfriend and a skilled gymnast, The Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) is a powerful yet unpredictable sorceress, Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) uses razor-sharp/explosive boomerangs as his weapon of choice, Katana (Karen Fukuhara) is a fully trained martial artist and samurai, while Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) has harden scale-like skin and superhuman strength. This may be the most diverse and talented cast in any comic book movie, Toss in Ben Affleck (Batman) and Academy-award winner Jared Leto (The Joker) and this is easily the best cast in any comic book movie. With Director David Ayer (Fury) at the helm it’s sure to be a great film.
While we do not know many details about the plot, let’s stick to the obvious things. First off the fact that they’re called the “Suicide Squad” means someone is going to die. Everyone isn’t going to live happily ever after, the stakes are extremely high. Now we can assume who is going to make it out of this film alive (Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Killer Croc likely won’t be killed,) but that doesn’t change the fact that anyone – at any moment can be slaughtered by Amanda Waller if they get out of line. Another thing that I love about this movie is how dark it can get. These guys aren’t role models, they don’t inspire us with hope or teach us good morals and values. They kill and steal for money, or sometimes just for the fun of it. The idea that this story is told from the bad guys’ perspective makes this unique, in a year when there are six other comic book movies, this is what makes Suicide Squad stand out. Now, if the Joker is the main antagonist then that makes this even more interesting, especially for Harley Quinn’s character arc. Also, the fact that Batman put all of these criminals in prison in the first place could make for some amazing dialog! (Think of the Almost Got him episode from Batman: The Animated series.)
Can ‘Suicide Squad’ be the comic book movie of 2016? Yes. With this cast, director, and vision I think this could be the hidden gem of 2016. Now the question is, will it be the best comic book movie of 2016? I Know for sure it has some tough competition. I personally can’t wait to see Jared Leto’s version of the Joker go up against Ben Affleck’s Batman. Seeing characters like: Katana, Harley Quinn Killer Croc, and Rick Flag come to life on the big screen for the very first time will be incredible. In a year when superhero movies will be at its peak, Suicide Squad will be one that stands out because of the unique idea of the bad guys saving day.
Do you think Suicide Squad will be the best comic book film in 2016? If not, what movie(s) do you think are going to be better? We’d love to hear you opinion.
